Periodontal/Gum Disease

Periodontal/Gum Disease

Gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis) is a common condition that affects many adults and can impact both your oral and overall health if left untreated. Early signs may include bleeding gums, bad breath, swelling, tenderness, or gum recession. In more advanced cases, it can lead to bone loss and tooth loss.

Gum disease develops when plaque and bacteria build up along and under the gumline, causing infection in the tissues that support the teeth. The bacteria and inflammation can also enter the bloodstream, which is associated with a higher risk of certain medical conditions, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes complications, and other systemic health concerns.

Treatment depends on the severity but often includes a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) to remove buildup below the gums and allow healing. In some cases, additional therapies or medications may be recommended.

We evaluate your gum health at every routine visit to help catch issues early. If you notice signs of gum irritation or bleeding, let us know so we can recommend the right treatment and help restore your gum health.
